Pulmonary tuberculosis is a major health problem in the world, particularly in the developing countries including Indonesia. In Indonesia there are 583.00 new cases every year with death of 140.000, most of them were from productive age group, low level of social economic grade and who live in villages away from healt treatment. This could be affecting the succes of controlling pulmonary tuberculosis (P2TB paru) programs, mainly in the case finding coverage, conversion and recovery. So that it requeries a program implementation to access all victims who have never been taken care by the health treatment.
The study was aimed to obtain a more effective strategy or method in the program of prevention and controlling the pulmonary tuberculosis in order to improve the case finding coverage, sputum conversion and recovery. It was an epidemiological study with cross sectional design. The subject of this study are all of the pulmonary tuberculosis victims being recorded in the community health centers (puskesmas) located in Banggai Regency during 2001 (total population), The data collection was conducted by interviewing and field observation.
The results of this study showed that in the villages community based tuberculosis control program the case finding coverage of 44,1%, the sputum conversion of 97,4% and recovering rate of 91,02%, the cost required per victim unit was Rp. 907.318. In the villages of non community based tuberculosis control program, the case finding coverage of 29,8%, sputum conversion of 95,2% and recovering rate of 83,1%, where the cost required per victim unit was Rp 912.215.
It was concluded that the implementation on community based tuberculosis control program system was found to be more effective in improving the case finding coverage, sputum conversion, recovery and was more cost effective.
