Summary: | Senandung Semenanjung (subsequently abbreviated into SS) is Wisran Hadi's play which won the Indonesia Play-Writing Contest in 1985. It has received wide-range response which, in general, are negative by regarding the playwright to break the tradition and despise the myth, historical envent and characters, all of which the Malay people strongly belive in to be true. The responses SS is a parody having an intertextual relation with Hikayat Hang Tuah (abbreviated as HHT), a great literary work that the Malay are very proud of.This research intends to prove the above assumption by using reception, intertextual, and parody theories.
It begins by analysing the structure and texture of SS. The result are used as data to identify the intertextual relation between SS and HHT as well as Wisran's creativity in responding to HHT.
As a text of parody, the intertextual relation in SS functions as criticism against the social reality found in today society by transforming the old symbols contained in HHT. The criticism is addressed in both direct and indirect manners. The direct criticism is conveyed through the characters'dialogue and the indirect one through the demythification of Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat characters and also through violation against the theme of feudal heroism. The Hang Tuah character in SS is depicted as a hero of the who bears worn-out values and norms, thus, no longer relevant to be a model for modern society. The play offers as subtitute a modern heroism concept represented by Hang Jebat, the character who puts forward new values.
The study concludes that the message the playwright wants to convey in SS is his concern on condition of today Malay who are still deeply absorbed in, and obssed by, their past glory. Such the condition makes the Malay frague ang unable to solve their problems.
