Description
Summary:In general, in a normative sense traditional villages in Bali display similarities with regard to physical architectural elements. But as far as non-physical elements are concerned, diversification in the social-cultural system means the spatial configuration of traditional villages varies. In fact, a specific social-cultural system, such as the found in the community of the traditional village of Pengotan in Bali, gives rise to unique architectural characteristics replacing general normative characteristics. This study uses a naturalistic-rationalistic model of the normative physical features of traditional Balinese villages in general to observe the physical architecture, which then is related to the social-cultural system of the traditional village of Pengotan. The study describes the quality of links between the specific social-cultural system and architectural features of the traditional village of Pengotan, and presents several indications of general normative features being replaced in a traditional Balinese village diversified by this social-cultural system. Finally, this study adds to our knowledge of the very specific features of traditional Balinese village.
