Description
Summary:ABSTRAK The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of chronzium carbide precipitation on the fatigue crack growth rate of AISI type 304 stainless steel. In this research, observation of microstructures, tensile and hardness tests were also carried out in order to justify the fatigue characteristics. The fatigue crack growth test was performed using a center cracked specimen. The precipitation of chromium carbide at the grain boundary was obtained by normalizing the raw material at 500 °C and 675 "C with holding time of 30 minutes. The existence of chromium carbide was observed by analyzing the microstructures of normalized materials. The experimental result shows that the precipitation of chromium carbide is increased when the normalizing temperature rises from 500 °C to 675 "C. The normalizing does not significantly increase the hardness as well as the ultimate and yield strength. However, it can increase the strain about 3,8 % and 6,6 % for the normalizing temperature of 500 °C and 675 °C, respectively. In contrast, it can decrease the fatigue life about 9,6% for both the normalizing temperature. Key words : AISI 304, precipitation, crack growth rate
