Description
Summary:ABSTRACT Paraserianthes falcataria is one of the major tree species for Industrial Forest Plantation and community forest in Indonesia. Artificial planting of this species, spread widely in Java, Sumatera and Kalimantan but most of it, use seed sources from Java 'land race' which have a narrow genetic - base. However, some natural population (provenances) have much better growth and stem form. These traits would greatly improve the usefulnes of the species for plywood, pulp and paper production. The objective of the research was to study genetic variation between seed sources from provenances and land races. The trial of Sengon Taut seed sources was established in Muara Teweh, Central Kalimantan consisted of nineteenth provenances from Man Jaya and Maluku, and landraces from Java were included. Those provenances and land races were tested according to Randomized Completely Block Design with 6 replications, 25 square plots and spacing of 3x3 m. Parameters of survival percentage and height growth were measured at age of 6 months after planting. The result of analysis showed that the provenances and land races tested indicated significantly different for height growth and not significantly difference for the survival rate. At this early stage, land races from Java are better than provenances from Irian Jaya .and Maluku. Where ever, provenance from Wardo (Irian Jaya) and land races from Ciputat (Jabar) and Candiroto (Jaten) are better to those seed sources.
