Knowledge of the heritability of a character, correlation between characters and selection indices are very important to the breeder in crop improvement program through selection, especially when concerned with changing two or more characters simultaneously. This study estimates those parameters apilied in several traits of sugarcane using design II of Comstock-Robinson. The experiment was arranged in RCBD with four replications using 4 males parents namely, F 154, CP 47 � 193, CP 51-21, and BO 821, and 4 females parents namely, Ps 52, BO 414, Vesta and L 65 � 69. Plot size was 6 m2 consisted of 15 seedlings. The materials were planted in June, 1980 and harvested in July, 1981. The results showed that broad sense heritability of all characters studied were higher than 80%, which indicated a high genetic variation within population. There were highly significant positive genotypic an phenotypic correlation between kg-brix with all other characters except with stalk length. A positive correlation between cane weight per stool and brix was also observed. The use of path coefficient as a relative economic worth of characters involved in the index seems to be easier way. However, to use this method ones should consider the magnitude of residual effect and should have genotypic and phenotypic variance and covariance estimates with high precision.
