Description
Summary:The sawing of tropical timbers that contain silica blunts the teeth very quickly between sharpening. To prolong Tooth life between sharpening, the use or stellite facing on the teeth become successful. The research will investigate, should all the teeth be stellite tipped. stellite tipped alternately (one after the other) or stellite tipped one after two others, upon the speed and quality of cutting and the cost of sawing. Five wood species were used, i.e. teak, sengon, mahoni, pinus and coconut wood. Mahoni, pinus and coconut wood were cut using two types of sawtooth, i.e. full stellite lipped and siellite tipped one after the other. Teak and sengon were cut using three types of sawtooth, i.e. full stellite tipped, stellite tipped one after the other and stellite tipped one after two others. The results showed that full stellite tipped teeth gave higher speed of cutting, lower cutting quality and higher cost. The best cutting quality was obtained by using teeth that were stellite tipped alternately, i.e. lower cost, high speed of cutting and better cutting quality. Keywords: alternate stellite tipped saw teeth, cutting speed, culling quality
