Description
Summary:The availability of remote sensing data on several bands allows the observation of forestland phenomena using several bands simultaneously. Empirically, observation through several bands at the same time was often difficult, although assisted by computers. In order to obtain quantitative data from vegetation, some special transformations were developed to produce one or more new images. The images produced through special transformation were considered being more representative to present vegetation variability quantitatively. Vegetation indexes which are widely known are Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Vegetation Index Faster (VLF). This research was carried out in wetland area of Rasau Tinning Resort and dryland area of Sorek Resort located in forest plantation (I-ITI) of PT Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper Co., Riau. The objectives of the research were to identify forest plantation using Landsat TM digital data, to determine correlation between brightness value of vegetation index and crown density of forest plantation, and to know Crown Competition Factor (CCF) at any level of crown density. The results of the study on crown density and Crown Competition Factor using data from digital Landsat TM analysis indicated that: I. Landsat TM digital data was useful to identify forest plantation of Acacia mangium. 2. The vegetation brightness values measured as RVI, NDVI and VIF transformations were closely related to crown density. These were indicated by the high value of correlation coefficients. The correlation coefficients in dryland area were relatively higher than on wetland area, which indicated that vegetation spectral reflection on wetland area was lower than the actual reflection due to light absorbtion by wetland area 3. Crown density of different HT1 showed different Crown Competition Factor. CCF value had close relation to plant's age with. Using the relationship between plant's age, crown density and CCF, progress of HTI plants is justified.
