With this method, elastic and elastoplastic depth of indenter penetration are measured as a function of load. This approach enables determining not only of hardness but also of elastic modulus and yielding stress of the specimen surface. These devices have very high sensitivity, which allow an investigation of the mechanical properties of surface layers as small as several micrometers thickness. This method was applied to estimate the elastic modulus and yielding stress of laser coating and laser surface alloys with 0,1 mm thickness.
