Summary: | The study on the relationship of wood structure and/or anatomy and wettability with adhesion strength is very important for developing the wood adhesion classification. This typical classification have been set up based on wood specific gravity without involving other properties. This study aimed at finding out the relationship of other properties for completing the required classification.
The research was conducted using 9 wood species representing a wide range of specific gravity, that was from the low specific gravity group to the high one. Wood structure and its anatomy parameters were the percentage of wood elements such as pores, rays, axial parenchyma and fibers. The wood wettability was evaluated by CWAH method, while the adhesion strength was tested by shear block test. The adhesive was linier polymer of PVAc. Regression analysis was adopted to evaluate their relationships.
The result of the research showed that wood adhesion strength did not produce a good correlation index with CWAH (r= 0.03), while fibers percentage produced a better result with r = 0.33. On the other hand, CWAH had a better relationship with pores than fibers percentage with r values of 0.30 and 0.20 consecutively. A multiregression analysis showed much better correlation index with r= 0.50.
