To date, no drug has been developed exclusively for the treatment of neuropathic pain, although many drugs traditionally used for non-pain indications are being utilized. So far, a diagnosis-based treatment approach has been used to treat neuropathic pain. This, however, is probably not the most effective way to address specific neuropathic pain signs and symptoms. Consequently, there is a need for developing a pain mechanism-based approach as an alternative to the current therapy.
