Summary:Abstract Six paddy soils of different land utilization types developed on volcanic ash deposits of Mt. Merapi were studied,. with the objectives of dating' their micromorphological characteristics to their management.. All.pedons were sampled in the southern and southeastern footsiope areas of Mt. Merapi. Information on micromorphological characteristics of hydromorphism, in volcanic ash is relatively scarse, but some pedogenetic processes can be recognized and investigated by means of micromorpholoey. The description and terminology used in this study were based on Bullock et al., (1985). The oxidation and reduction processes occuring as a results of management of soils by periodic flooding have caused the segregation and redistribution of iron which were observed in the profiles as rusty brown and black iron oxides deposites as modes or nodules. . � Thin section studies �sho� that iron :segreeationS were the most Obvious pedological features. They were�present�as coatings, hypocoatines and nodules. The presence of these Fe-features suggests and alternation of reducing and oxidizing conditions, and can be considered as temporary hydromorphism due to artificial flooding. Intisari Enam pedon tanah sawah yang berbeda int ensitas penggunaannya, dan berkembang pada endapan abu Gunung Merapi dipilih dan diberikan karakteristik mikromorfologi hubungannya dengan pengeloiaan .tanah. Profil yang dipilih berasal dari lereng sebelah selatan dan tenggara Gunung Merapi. Informasi tentang mikromorfologi gejala hidromorfik pada tanah abu vulkanik sangat terbatas, tetapi proses pedogenesa yang terjadi dapat diamati dan dipelajari berdasarkan karakteristik mikromorfologi. Dalam studi ini pemberian dan istilah mikromorfologi yang digunakan berdasarkan sistem yang dikemukakan oleh Bullock el al., (1985).
