Saturated soil culture increases soybean grain yield. An experiment to find out whether under saturated soil culture soybean can reach a critical and optimum leaf area index or not was done from August to November 1990 in Klaten.
A 6x2 Split Plot design with 4 replications was applied. The main plot was irrigation technique, consisted of 6 levels i.e. Control (K) which flood:irrigated once a week and saturated soil culture which maintaining the water surface of 0 cm (Go), 7.5 cm (G1), 15 cm (G2), 22.5 cm (G3), and 30 cm (G4) below soil surface. The subplot was soybean cultivars consisted of Petek (local) and Wilis (improved variety).
Results of the experiment showed that soybean had a ciritcal leaf area index (LAI) of 2.12, an optimum LAI for growth of plant ranged from 2.20 up to 4.50 and an optimum LAI for growth of seed of 2.30. Under saturated soil culture with surface of water as high as soil surface, plant had a very low LAI. When the water surface as low as 7.5 or 30 cm or flood irrigated once a week, LAI were lower than the critical and optimum LAI, but when the water surface was 15 cm below the soil surface, the critical and optimum LAI were reached and plant had the highest yield.

Genangan dalam parit dapat meningkatkan hasil biji kedelai. Suatu penelitian untuk mengetahui apakah dengan genangan dalam parit tesebut, tanaman kedelai dapat mencapai indeks luas daun kritik dan optimum telah dilakukan antara bulan Agustus sampai November 1990 di Klaten.
Rancangan penelitian yang digunakan adalah petak terbagi 6x2 dengan 4 ulangan. Petak utama adalah cara pengairan terdiri dari 6 aras, yaitu kontrol (K) yang diluapi sate minggu sekali, genangan dalam parit dengan muka air 0 cm (Go), 7,5 cm (Gi), 15 cm (G2), 22,5 cm (G3), dan 30 cm (G4) di bawah permukaan tanah. Anak petak adalah kultivar kedelai terdiri dari kultivar Petek (lokal) dan Wilis (unggul).
