Life and death are fundamental to man's existence because they are innate features which are inseparable from each other. Death is determined in universal historicity, and it radically questions the whole existence of man as to how we should live meaningfully in this world. Our understanding of the meaning of life and death is closely bound up with our understanding of the essence of man. With regard to the importance of this theme for understanding what and who man really is, this research attempts to disclose the meaning of man's life and death as reflected in Islamic epigraphy.The questions raised in this research are as follows: Does the meaning of man's life and death in Islamic epigraphy meet the philosophical catergory? Can the meaning of life and death in Islamic epigraphy contribute to an increased understanding of the Indonesian man?The methods adopted in this research are historical analysis, description, and reflection.The results of the research are as follows:Death is an integral part in the historicity of man's life. Awareness of perfect life and death can be built up through living in terms of the divine aspect, living in terms of the aspects of individuality and sociality, living in terms of the aspect of the morality, and living in terms of the aspect of infrahuman world.Man's decision in life affects his life orientation. A life that nurtures and perpetuates falsifies and deviations is not oriented to God. A life that perpetuates and is committed to human and divine values signifies a choice of a perfect death. Death is an inevitable indication of the termination of man's mortality in this worldly life. The tedency towards man-made worldliness will sink to nothingness, except for his immortalized virtuous deeds.The xieaning of life and death will be discovered by man during his lifetime his relationships with his fellow beings and not after his death. He accepts death with complete awareness because he realizes that he will die in order to live existentially
