Summary:ABSTRACT TRI-2025 as a superior tea clone has been widely used in Indonesia for either replanting or e.xtensification in the last decade. Based on its fresh leaf production, this clone performed good stability in several years of evaluation. In the recent evaluation, however, GPPS-I/2678 clone which has been released as 'Gambung-9' also showed good stability with better production. It seems that evaluation based on its ,fresh leaf production alone is less for granted. The study aimed to compare performance of GPPS1/2678 and TRI-2025 based on the number of pecco shoots, number of banjhi shoots, as well as fresh leaf altogether, using discriminant analysis. The results showed that the means of three characters observed between both populations were significantly different, and TRI-2025 was inferior compared with GPPS1/2678, although they still maintained their stabilities as compared with previous evaluations. Intensive study on physiological aspect of pecco and banjhi shoot development is highly recommmended, prior to 401 to stimulate pecco and to suppress banjhi shoot growth in field Kevwords : tea, GPPS- 1/2678 clone, TRI-2025 clone, pecco shoot, discriminant analysis. INTISARI Klon TRI-2025 merupakan klon unggul yang sudah banyak ditanam dalam rangka peremajaan atau pengembangan areal pertanaman pada dekade terakhir di Indonesia. Dui beberapa kali evaluasi, 'don ini menunjukkan kemantapannya terhadap produksi yang diberikan. Pada evaluasi yang terakhir klon GPPS-1/2678 yang kemudian dilepas sebagai 'Gambung-9' juga menunjukkan kemantapan dengan produksi yang lebih tinggi. Meskipun demikian, penilaian yang hanya mendasarkan pada produksi pucuk segar dirasakan kurang memadai. Penelitian ini membandingkan dua klon tersebut berdasarkan jumlah pucuk peko, pucuk burung, dan produksi pucuk segar secara bersama-sama menggunakan analisis diskriminan. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa penampilan klon TRI-2025 di bawah klon GPPS-1/2678 meskipun keduanya tetap memberikan kemantapan produksi. Usaha merangsang terbentuknya pertumbuhan pucuk peko dan menekan pucuk burung sangat diperlukan dengan didahului kajian fisiologis yang intensif terhadap prosesnya.
