| Summary: | ABSTRACT
The aims of this study were to delineate the territory of pesantren and to describe its spacial environment. Pesantren Pabelan was established as the main object without separating it from Pabelan village. The explorations included sociological and morfological data, function and location of facilities. Qualitative data were obtained by field observation and apriori interview during February-July 1997. Using induction analysis, conclusion that could not be generalized, was made.
This study found (1) Kyal has great social role in the village,
(2) there are social link and stratification in pesantren and village communities, (3) time budget dan home range describe pesantren and village communities in their daily and religion activities, (4) educational systems organize in pesantren, (5) physical environment include function, location, pattern, and orientation of facilities, spacial environment and pathways.
This study concluded (1) Pesantren is a unit of culture that was separated and integrated with its environment village. Integrating factors are religion, obedience to kyai and equality values. Separating factors are age, activity system and internal authority, (2) Pesantren separates itself spatially by forming cluster , based on functional relationship and domain separation between male and female santri,
(3) Spacial environment is divided into (a) public territory (mosque, street) used by santri and village community, (b) semiprivat territory (library, hall) used together by male and female santri, (c) privet territory (home stay, class, service, dining room) used separately by male and female santri, (4) Dynamic defense influenced by kyai's personality determines the relationship between pesantren and village communities.
