Description
Summary:ABSTRACT A cross sectional study was carried out in three hospitals (Sardjito Hospital, Muwardi Hospital and Tegalyoso Hospital) from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1991 to examine the association of teenage-pregnancy and low birth weight. There were 236 cases of teenage-pregnancy and 472 control were randomly selected from women who delivered in those periods. Using bivariat analysis there was an association of teenage pregnancy and low birth weight with relative risk 5.1 (95% C.I. = 3.6-7.4). Stratification analysis by Mantel-Haenszel method shows that teenager was to be a single independent factor. The multiple logistic regression analysis confirmed that teenage pregnancy, gestational week and nutritional status were significantly associated with low birth weight. It is concluded that teenage pregnancy increases four times the risk of low birth weight. Key words: teenage pregnancy, nutritional status, gestational week
