As the heart and the lung of the high education level, library has to be able to give satisfying service to the academic participants and can give a life to the tri darma activity in its environment. In this era of advanced computer and communication technology, library in the high education level can be the "library without walls", i.e. accessing the library collection, which are not limited by the physical building, but can reach far to the worldwide, even to the abstract world of computer network (cyberspace). Library is hoped to be "one stop shop" or commonly called as a complete place to find information on the literature material so that the users of the library do not need to go to the other places.
This study is aimed to find out the problems, by comparing the existing libraries in other university and, then giving a solution on what kind of effort should be done to increase the UPT (Technical Implementing Unit) library of IAIN Sunan Kalijaga Jogjakarta, so that is it becomes a research library. That effort is focused of the service, available collection, accuracy, advanced information, human resource, and the users of the library factors.
This study concludes that the service system and the available collection either printed or unprinted, in fact it was not adequate to support the research activities. Besides, it also found out that there was no ability factor of the major library manpower from the ability to master the advanced technology (computer, CD-ROM, internet, microfiche, microreader). The professionalism of the library staffs and the librarian tended to be low, so that caused the absence of the college students and the researchers, who will use the library as the research place.
To make the UPT of Library of LAIN Sunan Kalijaga Jogjakarta becoming a research library, a research and a study gave similar result in the form of several ideas and recommendation: procedure and the existing service system needed to be developed, the collection had to be furnished with the stress on the number of the title, the accuracy and the advance of the information needed to be highlighted by adding the collection of the library staffs and the librarian and the cooperation between the similar libraries had to be emphasized, and nationalizing library.
