Summary:ABSTRAK To test whether smoking and air pollution have influence on chronic obstructive lung diseases (COLD), a preliminary study was taken cross sectionally from November 1, 1990 until April 30, 1991, in Sardjito General Hospital. Thirthy nine patients were diagnosed as chronic bronchitis and emphysematous lung. Among them after being tested using dry drum spyrometer, there were 12 patients (30.7%) were diagnosed as COLD, consisting of 9 male (66.7%) and 3 female (333%). Among these patients, 5 male (41.6%) were smokers, 4 males (33,3%) were ex smokers and 3 females (25%) were passive smokers. It was also shown that 7 patients (58.4%) live in an area with relatively high air pollution and 6 patients (50%) had kitchens that weren't separated from their houses, so that could inaease their exposure air polltition.
