There is a growing realizations and that going it alone is not an economically viable proposition and the strategic alliance trend is fast redefining the very concept of competition. For business, the strategic alliance forms a bridge to the facture to gain strategic advantages.
Strategic alliance between companies, whether they are from different parts of the world or different ends of the supply chain, are a fact of life in business today. They may require materials, skill, know-how, finance, or access to markets, and recognize that these may be as readily available through cooperation as through ownership.
Alliances are one means of competing. The development of strategic alliances are often manifestations of collaboration between competitors. According to Kenichi Ohmae, the prominent strategy guru, globalization mandates alliance and makes them absolutely essential to strategy. The phenomenal growth in joint ventures and alliances in Indonesia alone has demonstrated the power of joint venturing. It seems cooperative partnership, will become the dominant form of business in future decades.
This article explores some aspects of business alliances mechanism, characteristics, dimensions, and levels of integration, and suggest the "do's" and "don'ts" informing a business alliance.
