Background: In recent years. refOrmation on health care financing in Indonesia is becoming an important issue It local as well as national level. It is not only the effect of globalization in which many developing countries are searching and debating to look for an appropriate health care financing system. It is also because significant changes on mechanism, allocation and 1.illance of finance between central and local government arc happening in Indonesia. The issue is becoming more important by the fact that many Indonesians arc having limited access to health care worsen by the economic and political crisis. This article is trying to present various alternatives-financing systems their strength and weaknesses. It is hoped that the policy makers will he already well informed when choosing the hest option. Results: The health insurance scheme run by multi-payers at district level seem to he the most inefficient and most likely that cross-subsidy mechanism will not he working. A single payer at provincial level and oligo-payer seem to he the most efficient model. Keywords: health insurance scheme. health care financing, Indonesia
