Summary: | Introduction: Various programs to develop an Indonesian managed health care system (JPKM) have been implemented since 1992. To find a sustainable, effective and efficient managed care system it is necessary to appraise critically all studies related to the development and implementation of the system.
Method: All studies related to JPKM from five well-recognized universities in Indonesia were collected and selected. The collected study results were assessed and analyzed in terms of its coverage, benefit package development and barriers according to aspects of plan, health providers and community.
Results: The coverage development of Indonesian managed care system and health insurance in Indonesia is very slow. This is due to complicated problems related to the supply and demand side. The supply sides include problems of the qualified human resources, organizational structure, capital, management and information system. While the demand sides include in-conducive local culture, health is not viewed as the priority need, limited number of people having structured wages.
Conclusion: To accelerate the coverage development of the Indonesian managed care, a radical change is necessary to be conducted. The participation of Indonesian to the proposed managed care system should be compulsory rather than voluntary basis and system should be gradually implemented.
