The government has already taken a number of counteractive policy measures, such as shifting from a managed to a free floating exchange rate, tightening liquidity, and even asking the IMF for assistance. But all these moves have yet to halt the ever plummeting rupiah. Banking in Indonesia has been hit both directly and indirectly by this drop in the rupiah, and the policies to tighten liquidity. The falling rupiah scores a direct hit on the banking sector, and government policy an indirect impact. This article discusses to what extent government policy can cushion the banking sector from the impact of the sliding rupiah.
