Summary:ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to assess the establishment of Industrial Forest Plantation (IFP) support the production of fiber wood in the Province of South Sumatra (3° 15' - 4° 15' S and 103° 30' -104° 15' E). The study area lies in the Eastern Plain and Hills of Sumatera with an elevation of at least 10 1850 m.a.s.l, annual rainfall from 2764 mm to 3248 mm and 2 to 4 dry months. The environmental law and regulations related to Environmental Impact Assesment (especially for IFP) have been used for the analysis of the study. The result of the study shows that the establishment of IFP will give two major impacts which are: (1) physical impacts dealing with erosion problem and the water balance. (2) social impacts especially about the ownership of the land. The result of study indicated that cooperation between forrestry planners and environmental list should be arranged for the establishment of IFP and monitoring program should be done for long term and short term effects.
