Summary:ABSTRACT Background: Merger between Provincial Health District and Health Office of Yogyakarta Special Province resulted in a tighter new organizational structure. The consequence of tighter organization is downsizing. There are various ways to downsize including early retirement, allowance, education and training, and changing job sta¬tus. This study was aimed at finding out the options of downsizing method and per¬ception of staff on the option of downsizing they expected. Methods: This was a descriptive method using a qualitative approach. The location was in the office of former Health Office, Department of Health, Yogyakarta Special Province and the office of former Health District of Yogyakarta Special Province. The subjects were staff of both offices and the samples were taken purposively. Data were obtained through focused group discussion, in-depth interviews, and observa¬tion. Results: There were 8 ways of downsizing, i.e. early retirement, allowance, training and education, changing the status of job from government employees to contract staff, providing government's facility, opening new positions, appropriate weekdays, and providing government's rewards. The perception of 8 ways of downsizing was divided into 3 groups, i.e. respondents' willingness to get government's aid, respon¬dents' willingness to get compensation from the government
