Summary:ABSTRACT Expert system is a branch of Artificial Inteligence that makes extensive use of specialized knowledge to solve problem at the level of a human expert this research is aimed to build an application of expert system as a tool aid for diagnozing stroke diseases and giving its therapy. In this case the specialized knowledge was acquired by interviewing with the human experts who are the neurologist and his staff at stroke unit Dr. Sardjito Hospital at Yogyakarta. In addition, the specialized knowledge was also taken from the printed and electronics documents about stroke diseases. Having these knowledge, the knowledge based and others components of the expert system were built according to the steps of building expert system. The developed inference engine was built using forward chaining method and having certainty factor for reasoning under uncertainty. The experimental results show that the expert system is capable of doing consultation for stroke diagnozing by giving some evidences such as some laboratory tests and patient stroke symptoms. The result of consultation provided by the system are the possibility of having stroke, stroke diagnose and its therapy suggestions. The system is also provided a friendly user interface using Indonesia language dialogue. Key words : expert system, stroke diagnozing, forward chaining methode, certainty factor
