Summary:ABSTRACT The location of area planning has an interlinked aspect in holistic area planning. This area has not developed so far that it needs a special direction to balance a line of Penghibur Street and other short cuts to other area including Sumbaopu Street Based on the space planning of Makassar, Sumbaopu Street is a part of Mariso Sub district and other small part of Ujung Pandang Sub district, where the street's functions are for trading and business administration. Related to the functions, this research was focused on what kinds of social, cultural, and economic potentials are available in Sumbaopu Street area. Do the potentials face problems that can not be developed if related to current situation? What kinds of direction or leadership do they need to develop Sumbaopu Street? Identifying the potentials and problems found in determining physical, social, cultural, and economic patterns, it can be concluded that : 1. Sumbaopu Street is a strategic area having potentials for all social, economic, and cultural activities, 2. Sumbaopu Street has a special phenomenon in space used for heavy commercial activities, so that social and cultural supporting-systems are not develop well yet 3. Sumbaopu Street is roughly divided into formal economic groups (trading and services) and informal economic group i.e. informal traders along pedestrian lines of the Street Keywords : Potentials for all social, economic and cultural activities, Potentials Face Problems
