Description
Summary:Abstract The study was conducted in the peatland in Central Kalimantanand West Kalimantantaken as representing tropical peatland with several different .types of land use as treatmeant. The measurement of C02 emission and peat sampling were conducted in three periods of time: 200~ 2006 and 2007. The study sites in Central Kalimantan numbered four types of land use: Chinesse cabbage (1-5 years of cultivate), Chinesse cabbage (6-10 years of cultivate), Corn (1-5 years of cultivate), and Corn (6-10 years cultivate). Whereas the study sites in West Kalimantan numbered four types land use: Corn, Aloe vera, Oil palm and Rubber. Carbon dioxide emission were measured with a portable infrared gas analyser (PP System, EGM-4). The research result shows the average of C02 emissions released of peatland in West Kalimantan ranged from 0.35 to 1.19 g CO2.m'2.h-1,higher than the emissions released in the peatland in Central Kalimantan, whereas ranged 0.35 to 0.67 g CO2.m-2.h'l. C02 emission released by land of annual plant higher than the seasonal crops. The amount of C02 released is influenced by water level from the peat surface, pH of peatland and duration of peatland clearing period. The lower the water level from the surface of peat land soil, the higher the C02 emission from the soil. The increasi pH of peatland is fol/owed by an increasing amount of C02 emissions released. The longer the peatland is cleared, more C02 emissions occurs. In order to reduce the amount of C02 emissions released by the peat soil, the ground water level of the peatland utilized for cropping must be managed accordingly.
