Description
Summary:Facility layout is one of the factors that affect the efficiency of production activities. It can be defined as the grouping of equipments and operations in afactory for the greatest degree of efficiency. Difference functions of each department of a company will provide a number of possible locations or place positions. Each department has a wide requirement of process activities and relationship with other departments. The problem is how to determine the composition of inter-departmental decent considering the cost, flow, and distance. Researchers have developed models on multi-floor facility. However, the models have been focused on manufacturing industry and less appropriate to be applied in the service industry. This is because the model does not consider aspects that are commonly encountered in service industries such as the number of employees in a department that implies to the minimum space requirement. Given the limitations of the previous models, this study aims to develop a model of multi-floor facility in the service industry. The optimality of the layout is based on the costs incurred in the flow of movement among departments with respect to the activity flow and distance among departments. To examine the model a numerical example is presented. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was done to test the robustness of the model. The result showed that the model developed in this study is robust and feasible to solve problem of multi-floor facility in the service industry.
