Description
Summary:Background. The main goal in the treatment of patients withperiodontal disease is to establish proper infection control by reduce the bacterial load below the individual threshold level for disease, Conventional mechanical therapy cannot completely remove allperiodontalpathogens. Recolonization by bacteria remainingin pockets or the tissues should be prevented by antimicrobial therapy. Antimicrobialphotodynamic therapy (PDT)is a novel non invasive photochemical approach for infection control with elimination of periodontal pathogens, Objectives. The purpose of this literature review is to show the bactericidal effect of antimicrobialPDT on periodontal pathogen and the clinicalresponse to antimicrobialPDT applicationin periodontal therapy. Literature studies, The use of photodynamic therapy principallythe fact that it is specifically targeted. non invasive, non antibiotic and minimally disruptive to host tissues, AntimicrobialPDT have reported efficient in elimination of periodontalpathogens which combines the applicationof non toxic chemical agent (photosensitizer) withlow level energy. Discussion. AntimicrobialPDT can reduce signs of inflammationand to suppress periodontal pathogens in periodontal diseases. Conclusion. AntimicrobialPDT can work as an adjunctive to conventional mechanical treatment in periodontal diseases.
