Description
Summary:The characteristics of Rice Field Rat-Reproduction in Lowland Irrigated Ecosystem and Its Implication on Rat Control. The Research was conducted in Cilamaya, Karawang, West Java in 200 ha of farm land started from January 1999 to September 2002. The objective of the research was to study the characteristics of rice field rat-reproduction as a basic knowledge an rat control. Monthly rat sampling was carried out using Linear Trap Barrier System (LTBS) and also fumigation and digging the active burrow. Ten units of LTBS were erected in various types of habitats for three consecutive nights. Fumigating and digging of the active burrows were condicted in irrigation channel bank. Sexual maturiy, pregnancy, litter size, the number of embryo and placental scars were recorded. The preference of rice rats to inhabit a spesific habitat was measured based on the highest number of pregnant and lactating female rats capture in that habitat. The result indictaed that breeding if rice rfield rat occured during the generative stage of rice crop. There were three generations produced within one planting season and the average number of offspring was 10 animals for each preganancy. The highest number of offspring was recorded in the first pregnancy but then decreased gradually for the next pregnancy. The main breeding site for the rice field rats was found in irrigation cahnnel bank habitat. Based on this infromation, rat control should be conducted earlier (early planting season) before they start to breed. Furthermore, upflying the same crop pattern and synchronous planting date, as well as priotizing irrigation channel bank as the main target on that rat control was recommended. Key words: Rice field rat, lowland irrigation ecosystem, rat control.
