Summary:In Indonesia the production of sugar cane solid waste (bagasse) per year was high and it has potential as a renewable energy resource. The bagasse could be converted as a gaseous fuel through gasification method. The objective of this reserach was to study the performance of gasification of bagasse using fixed bed downdraft gasifier especially in term of production of methan, heat and stability of gas production. The methan was measured using gas chromatograph based on the relative comparation to acetylen. The energy was measured based on temperature difference in heating of a mass of water, and the stabilization of gas production was measurdd based on the time interval of gas could be burnt. The result shows that the gas production containt 3.6% of methan. The energy produced was 2,237.9 kJ/kg-bagasse, and the effective gas production was 11.6 minute/kg-bagasse. The main problem of gasification of bagasse was less stabilization of gas production due to low material compaction and uncontinuous mass flow.
