Summary: | Until today, Girls is the only children magazine in Indonesia (aimed at girls) that
covers fashion and beauty articles. This is seen peculiar since fashion and beauty
articles is not common for a children magazine. Thus it differentiates it from the
rest children magazines in Indonesia. This research is conducted in order to
analyze whether fashion and beauty text might contribute to the changing
construction of girls subject.
Girls seems to imitate tween construction from countries like United States and
Australia and incorporates it into its construction on girls subject. Tween is
someone aged between 8-12 and its character is known between children and
teenagers.
The focus of this research is to link social change to the change of girls subject
construction that becomes that background of this shift based on linguistic-text
research. Furthermore, in order to see the connection between text and its context,
and also to the effect it brings, this research based itself on Fairclough�s critical
discourse analysis, and especially to Fairclough�s idea on discourse and social
change. Linguistics text is the main concern here.
This research finds out that although tween is clearly manifested inside the text,
but Girls� girls are constructed in the boundary of girls (children) dominant
discourse in Indonesia. Nevertheless, this construction does not make it more
