ETD The writer analyzes the process of the Literary Transformation of a novel-based film that is purposefully entitled the same: The Color Purple, from Alice Walkers (1982) into Steven Spielbergs (1985). This Literary Transformation is perceived as a balance and its technical shifts from one medium to the other enable readers and audience to reobserve issues of race, culture, gender roles and traditional families. The balance or imbalance in the story is shown in the novel and the film. The incidents of rape, incest and lesbianism depict the imbalance that makes Spielberg shift them in the transformation. Formerly, Walker creates characters in the novel through the normal principle of opposition: black/white, submissive/dominant, male/female and the hegemony/minority. The opposites become the fundamental issues of race and gender. Thus, the disequilibrium of the novel leads readers to reconsider individual character histories and patterns. Accordingly, Spielberg shows his effort to shift the transformation manifestation to conform to the social phenomenon in America in the mid 1980s and the Zeitgeist (the spirit of the era). The writer analyzes the process of the Literary Transformation of a novel-based
film that is purposefully entitled the same: The Color Purple, from Alice Walkers (1982)
into Steven Spielbergs (1985). This Literary Transformation is perceived as a balance
and its technical shifts from one medium to the other enable readers and audience to reobserve
issues of race, culture, gender roles and traditional families. The balance or
imbalance in the story is shown in the novel and the film. The incidents of rape, incest
and lesbianism depict the imbalance that makes Spielberg shift them in the
transformation. Formerly, Walker creates characters in the novel through the normal
principle of opposition: black/white, submissive/dominant, male/female and the
hegemony/minority. The opposites become the fundamental issues of race and gender.
Thus, the disequilibrium of the novel leads readers to reconsider individual character
histories and patterns. Accordingly, Spielberg shows his effort to shift the transformation
manifestation to conform to the social phenomenon in America in the mid 1980s and the
Zeitgeist (the spirit of the era). |
