Summary: | This thesis examines one of the cultural aspects that is gender relation in
term of gender dynamics in the United States with the primary data of a short
story by Washington Irving The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820) and its film
adaptation Sleepy Hollow (1999). The dynamics of gender as reflected in the short
story and its film adaptation is analyzed with the sociological approach by looking
at the social context of place and time the works are made and with the approach
of feminism with the view that gender issues cannot be separated from the women
as the main issue in a work.
The transformation of the short story into the film directed by Tim Burton
creates some change in the form of addition, deletion and alteration of the
elements of the story namely plot, character, setting and theme. The changes are
in order to function because the short story and movie are two different media.
Short stories use written language while films use images. In this study, the
changes that occur in adapting the short story into the film contain two aspects,
namely, the first that the changes are in order to function and in order to deliver
the audiences hope horizon and the second is from the text that there are changes
in the text material. The changes indicate a shift in gender relation.
From this research it can be concluded that in the transformation of the
short story into the film contains a shift in gender relation. The dynamics in its
gender relation does not necessarily bring a change towards improving the
position of women in American society. A clear division of roles between men
and women that men are in the public sector and women are in the domestic sector
in the early 19th century made the relationship between gender is relatively
balanced because it is clear and therefore both can respect each other. With the
opening of employment opportunities for women and in other fields such as
education, it seems to provide opportunities for women but on the other hand it
requires women to try as hard as men instead they will get oppression from men
because the lack of usefulness. |
