Description
Summary:Anemia is a condition which often associated with increased morbidity, mortality and declining functional status in elderly. Many studies tried to examine the relationship between anemia and functional status in elderly but the results are not yet fully understood. One of the possible risk factors for decline in functional status in the elderly is anemia. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of anemia on functional status decline in elderly treated in nursing home in Yogyakarta. This study is a Community-based cross sectional study that analyzed anemia as a risk factor for functional status decline of Activity Daily Living (ADL) in elderly treated in Nursing home in Yogyakarta. Functional Status was measured in this study using the FIM scale (Functional Independence Measurement) and anemia status was assessed using WHO criteria. Study target population were all elderly population who live in Yogyakarta Province. The reachable population was elderly population living in nursing home in the province of Yogyakarta region. Samples were elderly with FIM score 54 (elderly with functional status in the moderate category) with laboratory tests to measure hemoglobin (Hb) levels with a photometric method. The study was conducted in april 2011. Data characteristics of the subjects were presented in as descriptive results. To assess the influence of anemia as a risk factor for functional status (ADL), results were tested with Relative Risk (RR). The relationship between anemia and functional status (ADL) were analyzed using Chi Square tests. Normality of data distribution was assessed by Kolmogorov Smirnov test. Statistical analysis was conducted with significance level of p <0.05 with 95% confidence interval. The result is expected to give the conclusion that elderly with anemia have a greater risk of decline in functional status (ADL) compared to elderly without anemia. Anemia in the elderly proved to be a risk factor for decline in functional status.
