Summary: | This study is aimed to know how identity of gender and sexuality are
performed in lesbian weblog in Indonesia. This research is particularly
purposed to identify the ideological meaning behind the performative
identity of lesbian blogger, and also to measure hir resistance against
subordination.
This research takes two weblogs as the corpus of the study namely Fried
Durian and Rahasia Bulan. While the analyzed chosen posts are those
which contain the issues of gender and sexuality. This study is a
multidisciplinary-based qualitative research which is applying Norman
Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. It employs three dimensions of
analysis. First is the description, in which language becomes the unit of
analysis. Here, theory of performativity is used to reveal how language
performs the identity of gender and sexuality. Next stage is the
interpretation, in which texts are associated with social contexts. This
interpretation is sharpened with Foucault's ideas about power relation
which elaborated in History of Sexuality. Last is the explanation, in which
Foucault's theory of power and knowledge and technology of self applied
to sharpen the analysis.
The result of the research confirms that identification of gender and
lesbian sexuality tends to be the combination of femininity and
masculinity. Through the process of criss-crossing, lesbian performs
hirself by doing "stage performativity", embedding the identification of
feminine and masculine identity through appearance, clothing, gesture, and
sexuality. Lesbian in social context still burdens hir social body as a
female. Female identity as a mother and a wife cannot make a lesbian
stays away from the demand of reproduction and femininity the discourse
produced by the regime of power. In fact, a lesbian blogger is a creative
producer in which (s)he transforms the heteronormative discourse. |
