Summary: | Background: ADHD is a common disorder with a unique and complex condition, indicated by a lack of attention, impulsivity or hyperactivity that profoundly affected the patients daily life. ADHD can affect many area of life, including in academic function. Objective: To assess the association between academic performance and ADHD in elementary school children in Yogyakarta.
Method: This is an observational cross-sectional study. Subjects were children who previously diagnosed with ADHD using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Disorder 4th edition (DSM-IV). Meanwhile, the control group consisted of children with adjusted age and gender, as well as class and school. The independent variables were age, gender, ADHD type, nutritional status, sosioeconomic status, parenting style, parents age and occupation. The dependent variable was academic performance in mathematic and Indonesioan language. Analysis was conducted with chi square test and logistic regression. Risk level was measured with p value of < 0.05 and 95% confidence interval.
Result: A total of 30 children were enrolled in each group. Among 30 children in the ADHD group, 12 children (4%) had poor achievement in Indonesian language compared with 3 children without ADHD (10%). 14 children in the ADHD group had poor achievement in mathematics compared with only 5 children (16,7%) in non-ADHD group. ADHD, IQ and parents income was significantly correlated with poor academic achievement. After multivariate analysis, only ADHD and IQ appeared to be independent risk factors for poor academic achievement.
Conclusion: ADHD is significantly correlated with lower academic achievement. Intelligent quotient and ADHD have a significant correlation with poor academic achievement in Indonesian language and mathematic. |
