Summary: | Background: Around 35% of child mortality is associated to malnutrition.
Globally, it is estimated that only 34.8% of infants are given exclusive
breastfeeding in their first six months of life. Particularly in Indonesia, there was a
decrease in both duration of exclusive breastfeeding and its follow-up till two
years in which the earlier was from 39.5% in 2002-2003 to 32.4% in 2007 while
the latter was from 58.7% to 50.3%. In Langsa Municipality, breastfeeding
practice reaches only 22.9%. The factors affecting mothers decision to continue
breastfeeding until six months are among others, socio-demographic and
psychosocial factors. Social support to breastfeeding mothers are breast-feeding
behaviors that support from others within the social network that is believed to be
beneficial.
Objective: To analyze family support towards duration of breastfeeding and
other psychosocial factors in the effort to improve the success of exclusive
breastfeeding in Langsa Municipality of Aceh Province.
Method: This study used a cohort retrospective study design, taking a location in
Langsa Municipality. The variables in this study were duration of exclusive
breastfeeding as dependent variable, family support as independent variable and
self confidence in ability to breastfeed, knowledge, occupation, and breastfeeding
experience as confounding variables. The population in this study was all
mothers that had a baby aged 6-12 months and lived in Langsa Municipality and
the sample was those who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sample counting
used PASS 2008 and the sample size was 230 persons taken using multistage
sampling, modified with purposive and simple random sampling. Data were
collected using a questioner which had been tested its validity and reliability. In
addition, quantitative data were analyzed with survival analysis using Kaplan
Meier, log rank and Cox proportional hazard model.
Result: The bivariate analysis showed a significant effect between family
support, self confidence in ability to breastfeed, knowledge, and mothers
occupation and duration of breastfeeding. Cox proportional hazard model
showed that mothers who received low family support from a risk family were
likely to discontinue breastfeeding 6 times greater than those who received high
family support (HR=6,39 |
