Summary: | Background : The first part of childhood asthma management program is
educate to develop a partnership (togetherness), between doctor and
parents. Parents need doctor�s social support including an information,
emotion, appraisal and instrumental support. Until recently, there has been
no guideline for doctors, including how the best method providing social
support to parents of a child with asthma, which applicable for the doctors in
daily practice.
Objectives of study : Developing a guideline how to deliver doctor�s social
support for parents, based from their experience, and to examine effectivity
in the management of childhood asthma.
Methods : First phase of research to construct a guideline of social support
provided by doctors to parents of children with asthma, based on in-depth
interview with 18 parents and 4 doctors. A second phase of research was
quasi-experimental study design, to assess the effect of social support
provided by doctors to parents, in the management of childhood asthma.
Research was conducted during the months of July-December 2008. The
intervention was doctor�s social support to 82 parents in pediatrics outpatient
clinic, Bethesda Hospital, Yogyakarta. The impacts of the interventions to
improvement in clinical signs were measured based on the assessment of
both parents and doctors. Third phase of research had been conducted,
which was a qualitative study with 10 doctors, to complete the guideline.
Results : We made a pocket guide �DOCTOR�S SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR
PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA� (10 guidelines which applicable for
doctor how to deliver in daily practice) a flowchart and a leaflet �ASTHMA IN
