The data used in this research is secondary data in the form of time series data (time series) monthly from 2008:01 until 2010:12. The variable used is real demand for currency as the dependent variable, whereas real PDB, interest rates, interest parity condition, and means of payment transactions using the card as independent variables. The methods of analysis used in this study are Engle-Granger co integration test and Error Correction Model (ECM). State assessment results for Indonesia and Malaysia show the long term, means of payment using the card has a positive effect on currency demand. Thus the increase in means of payment using the card has not been able to lower demand for currency in these countries. This may be caused by cultural society in Indonesia and Malaysia, where residents still prefer to hold cash because it is the most liquid. In the short term, for the state of Indonesia, means of payment transactions using the card has a positive impact on the demand for currency, is in contrast to Malaysia, where the variable is actually not significantly affect the demand for currency. For the case of Malaysia, perhaps this is because the kind of outstanding APMK still dominated by credit cards, so people still need currency for payment transactions daily. Thus the means of payment using the card, which consists of atm card, atm card + debit and credit cards both in Indonesia and Malaysia, although the development has increased in the last three years but still not able to substitute a cash payment and reduce the demand for currency in the community.
