Summary: | This thesis, entitled Hyper-reality in Dating behind Take Him Out (THO)
Indonesia, is a study of the growing number of instant dating reality shows on
television. Looking for a mate has now become a television entertainment industry
and appeared to be a social phenomenon. This dating television show should follow
the law of the television by selling commodity and distorting dating reality into
dating media reality which becomes hyper-reality.
This study uses a reality show Take Him Out Indonesia as an object of the
research and examines how the play and the role of signs in THO Indonesia construct
the dating hyper-reality on television and also explores how the consequences related
to the show. The method used in this study is hyper-semiotic in which the
interpretation of signs should use the six concepts related to hyper-signs as a method
of forming hyper-reality. The analysis of the texts is focused on the play and the role
of signs which is started from the commodification of the sign of dating or love and
other signs attached to the commodity with certain codes.
The results of this research show that in THO Indonesia, the commodification
of sign of dating or love really happens, pursuing added values, namely maximum
commercial profits. The commodification of love and mating is designed in an
aesthetic way by giving attention to packaging and visualization that can be seen from
the costumes of the presenters and contestants, screen shots, lighting, stage, popular
music, and artificial music background. The play of signs could also be seen from the
simulation of dating offering the contestants the different ways in finding a mate. The
simulation also shows the contestants or couples as if they were not symmetrical
with a reality, but this image is actually considered to be a reality.
The role and the play of signs, as described above, have consequences related
to media hyper-reality: (a) looking for a mate which is a private matter has been
changed into a public affair and business industry, (b) the spread of the obscenity
because in this show, even small private secret of man or woman, could be uncovered
explicitly and publicly, (c) creating a man of the show or narcissistic personality who
can work in accordance with the ideology of television entertainment, (d) creating a
man with identity whom should be recognized, idolized, and followed by others in
term of style, appearance, and image as shown in the show. |
