Description
Summary:Baobab is one of non-governmental women's human rights organization, which focuses on women's legal rights issues under the three systems of law in Nigeria, which are customary, statutory and religious laws (Sharia). This thesis will focus on Baobabs role in promote womens human rights in Nigeria with mobilize its resources i.e networking, media, and financial. Though networking both nationally and internationally, Baobab build its capacity, gets grant (financial support) and collective action support to make change for women. Baobab also uses media as a tool for communication and attempt more pressure to local, state or federal government to pay more attention and take serious actions in against violence against women. The attempt of Baobab in promote womens human rights especially in Sharia law, is not an easy work to do because Baobab have to face pro-Sharia group, which called hisba, which have full support from state government like funding and facilities. Hisbas duty is to enforce Sharia law. The enforcement of Sharia law by hisba often violates womens human rights. This is exacerbated by the fact that women are not aware of their rights so they tend to accept it.
