The flow can move quickly along the slope of volcano with greatly high temperature. The natural conditions of Merapi mount causes difficulty in monitoring pyroclastic flow visually, while the use of seismic equipment requires experts to analyze data. It makes difficulty among field personnel to give early warning to society in quick and appropriate manner. Therefore, a study is conducted by designing the early warming system of pyroclastic flow that can give facilities for field personnel to monitor the pyroclastic flow and can give a hazard warning. The study designs a geographic information system-based early warning system of pyroclastic flow by using temperature censor as pyroclastic flow detection equipment. It is expected that the system can give facilities in monitoring and give early warning to population around Merapi mount, so it can reduce victims resulted from the pyroclastic flow. The study was conducted using a field survey method, observation, and interview, while the designing of software was done by using a waterfall methodology or a linear sequential model consisting of analysis, design, implementation, and testing. To test the system, an infrared temperature censor was made using ATMega8535 microcontroller. Result of the study indicates that the geographic information system-based prototypical early warning system of volcano�s pyroclastic flow was built by using a temperature censor as a pyroclastic flow detection equipmnent. Temperature censor used in the testing of system was infrered temperature censor by using microcontroler as the changer of analogue-to-digital signal. The system has some facilities to regulate censor placement, read temperature in each censor, and give a hazard warning in accordance with predetermined limitations.
