Description
Summary:The background of this study is the recent condition of Balikpapan port getting congested since early 2000s. The capacity of the port is not possible to be expanded while the new container port plan is facing pros and cons whether it needs to be opened or not. This study describes the definition of port performance and the characteristics of port performances in term of container terminal. The quality of the port terminal is simulated by Arena 13.5. Arena 13.5 is a simulation software that is able to simulate the entities of port performances. By simulating the existing condition of Balikpapan port and predicting the scenario of new container port, a set of result is validated and evaluated to recognize the ports condition after 10 years. The result of the simulation shows that Balikpapan port has lower performance as it is impossible to develop several sectors. The number of vessels is limited and it makes the ship owners consider for better port to handle their trade. This research concludes that Balikpapan port is unreliable to be operated as a container port in the next ten years. Consequently, Kariangau container port needs to be opened as the result of simulation shows the better performance in most of all Kariangau port performance indicators
