Description
Summary:
Since 1990, PT. Musi Hutan Persada has been developing industrial plantation forest in South
Sumatra with Acacia mangium as the principal spesies covering more than 90 % of its plantation of 193
500 ha. The majority of plantation is grown of formerly alang-alang (lmperata cylindrica) grassland: the
soil belongs mainly to red yellow podsolic (Ultisol), having inherently poor nutrient reserve.
This study is aimed to assess the physical and chemical characteristics ofthe soil under A.mangi/lm
stand and compared them with other lands uses, namely alang-alang grassland and shrub. Five soil
profiles up to 100cm depth in each land use were characterized for soil bulk density, A horison depth.
organic C content, content ofN, total P. K, Ca, and Mg.
Results ofthis study indicated that under A. mangium forest plantation organic C and total N at A
horison were increased, while soil bulk density was reduced. Nutrient cycling in A. mangium stand
proceeded very quickly.
