Dnipalova <p>At the archaeological site Tell Arbid in NE Syria (north of ancient Mesopotamia) conducts a research of Polish expedition for last thirteen years. In 2005 started the cooperation with Czech archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology and Museology of the Masaryk University in Bmo. The aim of this expedition, headed by Dr. Inna Mateiciuciova, is to explore near vicinity of Tell Arbid, respectively smaller Tell Arbid Abyad from the Late Neolithic period. Within the programme proceeds a determination and recognition of provenance of stone chipped and polished artefacts. About half of founded chipped artefacts, e.g. blades or scrapers, are made of obsidian. The origin of this natural glass is allied with acid volcanism. However, no such mother rocks (rhyolite) are present in Syria. The nearest finding places of obsidians are situated in Turkey or Armenia. Turkish obsidians occur in four main regions, namely west Anatolia, central Anatolia (Cappadocia), NE Anatolia and SE Anatolia (vicinity of the Lake Van) and according to published papers there were intensively used in the Syrian and Iraquian parts of Mesopotamia. The aim of our investigation is the determination of obsidians provenience based on mineralogical (study of thin section under polarizing microscope and microprobe) and geochemical composition (trace and rare earth elements).
