ACHIEVING GOOD QUALITY BOND TO TOOTH USING RESIN COMPOSITE

<p>Background: Bonding to enamel and, subsequently, bonding to dentin have been among the most significant advancements in dentistry in the past 50 years. Despite the significant improvements of adhesive systems, the bonded interface remains the weakest area of tooth- restoration using resin composite. Purpose: To discuss the issues in related to the achievement an optimal quality of bonding to tooth using resin composite. The special attention is given to the interaction between adhesives and dental substrates, the currently available adhesive materials and their handling properties, as well as adhesion to carious tissue. Reviews: Successful adhesive bonding depends on the chemistry of the adhesive, on appropriate clinical handling of the material as well as on the knowledge of the morphological changes caused on dental tissue by different bonding procedures as well as carious lesion. Conclusion: Total etching systems are more technique-sensitive although show good long-term results. Self-etching systems have indication on dentin susceptibility cases. However, dentists should be careful when choosing adhesive systems and should fully understand their usage, advantages and disadvantages, hence scientific-based choices are made.</p>
