Description
Summary:
Peer acceptance and the acquisition of social problem solving are the important accomplishments in the development of young children. However, until recently studies on social problem solving strategies (hereafter SPSS) among pre-school children in Indonesia is still relatively scarce. Among others, the role of gender and child's age in the acquisition of SPSS, and its consequences in peer acceptance, are still unclear issues. Therefore this research was directed to examine and explain: 1) The mediating role of social problem solving strategies in the relationship between parenting practice and peer acceptance among pre-school children, 2) Differences in SPSS between boys and girls, and among the different age groups, 3) Differences in SPSS among the preschool children when they engage peers of the same and opposite sexes.
This study was conducted in Yogyakarta. The participants were 162 pre-school children that consists of 72 and 90 girls and boys, respectively, of 4 to 6 years of age.
Participants were selected on the condition that they live with both of their parents. The participants were divided into two group in according with the class position at their respective schools. The SPSS variable was elicited and measured using vignettes of hypothetical dilemmatic social situation. The variables of parenting practice and peer acceptance were measured by a five-scale and sociometry, respectively.
The results demonstrate that: 1) The mediating roles of SPSS in the relationship between parenting practice and peer acceptance is not significant, 2) There is no significant difference between SPSS between the age groups and the opposite sexes, 3) there are no differences in SPSS when the subject engages peer of the same and opposite sexes. Finally, two patterns of the use of SPSS were identified. In one hand, prosocial strategies are found to be used when children encounter conflicts due to resource scarcity and in the situtions when the actor wants to join a group. On the other hand, passive and coercive strategies are used when the actor are defending her or himself against the aggressive behavior of other child or children.
