ROOT IN EX- DEGRADATED LAND (CASE IN WANAGAMAI EDUCATIONAL FOREST, YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA) ABSTRACT By: Erma Widya Kusumawati1, Ris Hadi Purwanto2, dan Haryono Supriyo3 Forest is an important asset to the world because it offers as C02 gases absorption from the atmosphere. Thus, it is needed the measurement ofbiomass and carbon stock for knowing the standing stock potency in C02 absorption. Most of the last researches were not concern of below ground carbon stock measurement especially for root in ex- degradated land. Based on those backgrounds, this research aimed: estimating the biomass and carbon stock of mangium root in ex-degradated land, arranging allometric equations ofbiomass and carbon stock in correlation with C02 absorption of Wanagama, and estimating potency of biomassa, carbon, and C02 absorption form mangium Inventory of biomass, carbon stock, and C02 absorption had been done in area number 13, 14, 17, and 18 Wanagama 1 Educational Forest that used ten samples of mangium trees from different diameters. Research methodology consisted of 3 steps: determinating biomass and carbon stock with Walkley and Black, arranging allometric equations, and estimating potency of C02 absorption from mangium root. The average result of carbon content per tree is 56.98 % in which root biomass per tree were large root 24.652 kg, medium root 26.970 kg, and fine root 3.628 kg. Furthermore the root carbon stocks per tree were large root 15.244 kg, medium root 15.927 kg, and fine root 1.665 kg. The allometric equation in relation between the Dbh and biomass was B = O.Q19(Dbh)2509 (R2 = 0.929) and the relation between Dbh and the carbon was C - 0.009(Dbh)2548 (R2 = 0.924). From the result of inventory with 319 ha large and 1792/ ha number of tress, the average amount ofbiomass was = 21.278 ton/ha, with a total potential of 1,696.923 ton (CI0.95 =1,053.91 - 2,339.94 ton), the average amount of carbon was 11.449 ton/ha, with a total carbon potential of 913.097 ton (CI095 = 564.25 - 1,261.94 ton), and the average amount of C02 is 42.020 ton/ ha with a total absorbable C02 of3,351.066 ton (CI0.95 = 2,070.79 - 4,631.33 ton).
